Codecooler Onboarding

We collected all the important tools you will need to start learning.

GMail/Inbox

Our primary and official communication channel is email. We suggest using Gmail or Google Inbox as an e-mail client.

We have added you to a Google Groups mailing list, this is where you have been receiving the emails from the mentors. The mentor email address is also a mailing list containing all the module/room mentors. In case you need a reference of what are these addresses, here is a table for you:

Location Mentor Group Student Group
Budapest mentors.bp.progbasics@codecool.com students.bp.progbasics@codecool.com
Krakow (will be added later)
Miskolc mentors.msc@codecool.com class.msc.2018@codecool.com
Warsaw

While you’re in the module/room, please keep your subscription, don’t unsubscribe from the student group. This is our official communication channel, you’ll miss important school-related emails.

After you took a successful PA (Personal Assessment) at the end of the module and you decide to advance to the next module/room, you are free to unsubscribe from the previous student group. However, sharing preferences sometimes allow access to resources to only members of these groups (e.g. a Google Drive folder). If you want to keep your access to these but also don’t want to receive further emails from the group, you can set up your membership to “no-mail” in the Google Groups settings or set up an email filter in your Gmail account.

Discord

Discord is mainly for quick info sharing, so we may use it to send a link or ask a question etc. And we encourage you to use it as well for teamwork and also just for fun - sometimes it is more efficient to gather the opinions in Discord than hold a meeting.

Google Calendar

In Codecool, we will use several calendars for tracking events

  • The student calendar is for tracking common events in your current module/room (e.g. team building, summer break, workshops)
  • The consultation calendars are used for reserving consultation slots with mentors across all Codecool locations
  • The location calendar contains all the events at a given location (e.g. locational workshops, meetups, community events)

**The links included below ending.ics should not be clicked, it doesn’t work that way. ** Open Google Calendar, click Other Calendars → Add by URL and copy-paste the links there one by one.

In case you try to add a calendar and you see a permission error that can mean you’re not in that student group with whom the calendar is shared. If you can’t access any of your location’s calendars, write an email to your mentors ASAP.

ProgBasics student calendar

You only need to add the calendar of your location to access the room’s events.

Consultations

Consultations are the place of focused professional help from a chosen mentor. You can reserve any mentor of Codecool for a timeslot (using Google Calendar’s appointment slot feature) and in that timeslot that mentor’s attention is completely yours. The only rules are that you can reserve one slot per SI week to let others go to consultation as well, and you need to write an email to that mentor at least one day ahead to let him/her prepare for your questions/topics beforehand.

You’re free to add any of these calendars but adding your location’s is a must. If there are no remaining slots for a week or if you want to practice English, you can reserve a mentor at another location. In this case, please negotiate the communication channel you’ll use when the consultation’s time comes.

Drive

The best way to share files, like images or presentations (but not source codes!) with each other. We will upload there some stuff occasionally and you can also host there your presentations, spreadsheets etc.

When you create a presentation, we highly recommend you to use Google Slides to avoid incompatibility between different platforms and browsers. It also knows enough what we need at a presentation.

Canvas

Our LMS (Learning Management System) is Canvas. All learning material and assignments are accessible here.

Others

Of course, throughout the course, we will use other tools as well (IDEs, online programming tools, online coding games, various online services etc.).

But for sure the most used tool will be your best friend, Google Search :)
